Dr. Aundria Lear is the founder and owner of Vision Source South Asheville. Read her story and learn about what drives her to provide the highest quality in eye care and eyewear for each and every patient.
What made you decide to become an optometrist?
While earning my undergraduate degree at UNC Asheville, I worked part-time as an ophthalmic technician. One day, I helped a young girl try on her first pair of glasses. Her vision had been so poor that she could barely see shapes-until that moment. As she looked around in awe, her eyes landed on her mom, who smiled and said, "Hey, I'm Mama."
That moment changed everything. It was the first time she truly saw the world-and the first time I truly saw my purpose. I wanted to help people see.
What made you decide to open up a private optometry practice in South Asheville?
After graduating from optometry school, I returned to Western NC to work in private practice. While I valued that experience, I felt called to create something more-an elevated patient experience where I could provide personalized care and attention, offer the best in eyewear and technology, and build a team aligned with that vision.
In 2013, my husband and I took a leap of faith and began building from the ground up. We opened our doors in February 2015 with no patients, just a mission and a lot of heart. Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and Helene, my team and I have remained committed to serving our community with care and excellence.
What do you want your patients to know about you?
I love what I do. Caring for my patients brings me joy-but I couldn't do it without the people who've supported me along the way.
I was raised in Western NC by two incredible parents, David and Loretta, who instilled in me faith, integrity, and resilience. My husband, Mark, has been by my side since optometry school-my partner in life, my love, and even my tech support. Together, we've built a life that includes two amazing children who keep me smiling.
Behind every patient interaction is a network of family, friends, and faith that makes it all possible. I'm grateful for them-and for the opportunity to serve.
